Proposal for SuperStar
![]() |
An interactive multimedia video installation using computer generated animation, graphics, and sound. SuperStar explores space, or to be more accurately our comprehension of it from an egocentric position. SuperStar takes the audience on a pilgrimage that appears to starts at the distance reaches of the universe and ends inside our heads.
Introduction
Space is an abstract concept that helps us define our environment, we visualise space by what is confined within it. It would be presumptuous to assume any two people interpret space in the same way. SuperStar strives to disorientate the viewer from our world using sound and video. I will escort the viewer on a journey through the incomprehensible expanses of outer space into the internal head space where these images are assembled.
I hope to leave the audience with an overwhelming sense of amazement by sending them on a roller coaster ride of emotions as they experience the wonders of the cosmos.
The Sequence
There is an intense white light that slowly fades to reveal a blurred, pixelated view of dancing coloured shapes. Simultaneously a loud orchestrated noise softens to becomes an ambient sound. The surround noise is played back amplified out of cinq, traffic, sea, breathing and a dozen other sounds add to the confusion as you try to decipher what can be seen and heard.
Slowly what appears to be our galaxy becomes visible, the only sound is a resonates of before that fades to silence as we drift closer. The journey transcends into a continuously evolving abstraction, painted with lights that sparkle in and out of view. As we close in stars multiply in number and intensity, piercing the darkness.
Gradually the scene changes as light and sound blends, and a coherence returns, twinkling stars morph into camera flashes, a roar of a crowd/choir explodes, we are blinded as the screen returns to a solid mass of white light. As the concentration of light grows the sound of cheering and the noise of a thousand cameras clinking become one, you are the centre of attention adored by millions - You are a SuperStar
The film will be on a 10 minute loop and can be watched at anytime and point in its play for as long as the viewer wishes. The viewers own experience becomes an organic part of the artwork.
Microphones will record the surround sound and play it back almost immediately amplified and out of cinq. The surround sound will be mixed with the sound track and the dominance will shift between them. The effect will be like echoes in a cave - a sense of space is implied. This will make the participant feel slightly detached from their environment and help individualise and personalises their experience.
Technology Used
SuperStar is computer generated movie that will be show on a large video screen. It will be constructed using an array of programs such as Premier, after-effects, Photoshop, Flash, sound edit16 and cubase. These are all programs I have experience with, but I am looking for experienced programmers to collaborate on some aspects of the production .
I would also like to create a web version of SuperStar as a quicktime movie for the internet. A live cam link from the venue could be used for the duration of the show, this will give us a global audience and help publicise the event.
